This is love; not that we loved God, that he loved us and sent his Son for us” (1 John 4:10).  I have been thinking about love today on Valentines Day.  I am not sure our culture understands love.  Love has become something that is so focused on us.  People are so desperate to be loved.  We want to be loved because we want to feel better about ourselves.  We get value from whether or not someone loves us. Love can be very “me” centered. But the Bible shows us what love is: God loved us even when he got nothing back from us.  True love is an appreciation for the value of the individual, regardless of what they give you in return.  God’s love for humanity is often never reciprocated by those he loves.  Yet he loves us still. He believes we are still valuable despite what he receives in return. This is Love!  We should love others with the same kind of love.  On this Valentines Day, Love your spouse with that love. Not what your spouse gives to you, but because they are valuable.  This is the key to successful marriages.  Marriage is a commitment to love like Christ loves the Church.  This is love. Not that your spouse loves you, but that you love them and give yourself for them.
